Appearance: Kurotowa has a very solid build, but you wouldn't say he's fat, even if you were mean spirited. He has light skin, light brown hair, and bluish eyes. He doesn't take huge pains for his personal appearance, usually having the beginnings of a scraggly beard growing that he only puts the barest efforts to keep under control, and the faint odor of someone who doesn't shower every day. He's the type of person who won't bother most people, but who will really bother people with high standards for personal grooming.
He doesn't pay much attention to his clothes either, and so while he keeps them clean enough, you're not going to be seeing much variety. Kurotowa will be in uniform most of the time simply because he doesn't have a lot of clothing. He will, however, prominently display his badge of rank, should he have one (which in this setting, he ideally will.), simply because that will give him a real advantage in day to day life (you get more respect as the helmsman than you do as random shady looking guy #6).
Personality: Kurotowa is first and foremost a survivor. If asked, his first rule is "Look out for number one." and for the most part, he follows this rule. He's killed people in battle, both in ship to ship combat where you never see your opponent's face and in man to man battles where you can look your opponent in the eye while you fight, and while he didn't like killing people, he did it without hesitation because the alternative was them killing him. He also has few resrevations about lying or spying on people. He won't hesitate to turn tail and run if the situation calls for it. All told, it would be easy to write off Kurotowa as a complete waste of a human life.
He does, however, have some hope of redemption in him. He actually believes in his country. He doesn't like the ruling class, he has nothing but disgust for the lower class (And he has the right to dislike the lower classes, at least, having been a part of them), and he frequently expresses his contempt of the baffling, bureaucratic mess that is Ivona’s legal system. But even if he will admit to hating every part of his country by itself, if you pressed him enough he would admit that he felt that it still represents the greatest light of civilization and progress in the known world. It’s a very tarnished form of nationalism, but it’s still nationalism. He has also shown signs of extreme heroism when the pressure is really on. Once, when an allied airship crashed nearby the base he was stationed at at the time, he went ahead and charged into the flaming wreckage to see who was still alive to be saved (and what expensive parts of the ship could be salvaged, but the people were more important.). Of course, afterwards he was cursing himself for a fool for days, but he still managed to save three people and salvage the ship’s main engine core.
In short, Kurotowa is a bad man who will do the right thing when the situation calls for it, even if he hates himself for doing it later.
Abilities/Weapons:
While he lacks any supernatural powers of any sort, he is a top notch pilot, and is able to coax the most speed and maneuverability out of any ship he gets behind the wheel of, regardless of its size. He’s also is a competent navigator and has some skill in servicing airship engines as an engineer.
Kurotowa doesn't have much use for "noble" weapons. When it comes to a fight, he'll bring a gun to a sword fight if he can, and kick you in the nuts if he can't. Kurotowa fights dirty. His philosophy on violence is that your goal in a fight is to stop the other guy from hurting or killing you as quickly and efficiently as possible. If he does have to fight, his preferred weapon is a rifle or pistol, and if he HAS to go melee, rifle butt or a dagger.
How well can your character hack?: Being aware of what people around you think is a very useful skill for staying alive, so he's gotten pretty good at hacking. let's go with "Medium-hard", or sometimes even hard if he really puts his mind to it.
Weaknesses: Kurotowa doesn't get along with animals at all, especially horses, which was why he joined the navy instead of the Army. Also, despite being very competent at his job Kurotowa often makes a bad first impression with people. His poor personal hygiene, self-centered world view, and generally aura of sketchiness well make most people overlook his virtues and expect the worst from him. This is only exacerbated by his reputation of being an underhanded fighter and a drug smuggler. He was totally framed for being a drug smuggler, but the reputation follows him around none the less, despite his furious insistence that he was framed (He is very much an underhanded fighter though, and won’t make any real effort to deny that. He’s almost proud of that.).
History: Kurotowa was born in the slums of Abantiare. His father was an alcoholic and his mother was a drug addict, so he ended up spending most of his time running with a local gang which took to him fondly (They thought of the young kid as something between a pet and a mascot.). The leader of the gang was, in fact, something of a big brother figure to him. He looked destined for a life time of small time thuggery that would probably end when he got caught by a police officer in a bad mood.
Fortunately for him (though he didn't think so at the time.) the leader of the gang met that particular end first. The gang disintegrated from internal politics as various members jockeyed for the now vacant position of leader. All this internal stress culminated in someone selling them all out, and getting almost the whole gang arrested, Kurotowa included. Kurotowa was given a choice. He could disappear into prison where, as a sixteen year old kid he would probably live a fairly horrible life, or he could join the armed forces. He opted for the latter, and was sent to the navy.
He spent four years in a naval academy learning the basics, then another six on a real rustbucket of a corvette (The Liar), starting as an aide to the navigator. Two years into his time on the corvette, his ship was involved in fighting off a pirate raid. During the raid, almost the entire command crew, including the helmsman, were killed by stray gunfire, and Kurotowa was forced to take control to stop the ship from crashing on the spot. He was delighted to find that piloting was the most natural thing in the world for him. After the battle, the surviving officers, who had noticed his skill, had him reassigned as the trainee helmsman.
Kurotowa spent the next four years learning every dirty trick and every clever maneuver he could. The Liar gained a modest amount of fame for its unorthodox piloting and tactics. Had things continued, Kurotowa might have ended up as the captain of his own ship. Unfortunately, an unexpected investigation found him to be the head of a drug smuggling operation. He was kicked out of the navy in disgrace.
Or so it seems...
In reality, a powerful noble from Bellcius was suspicious of Captain Rowe. He decided that rather than confront the man directly, he would find a cat’s-paw. Poor Kurotowa was framed for the drug operation and then approached and offered the job, which he grabbed because he was promised a chance to clear his name as well as all kinds of riches and rewards. He was given the necessary recommendations to get hired onto the Silvana, and all he has to do is keep an eye on Rowe and learn what he can. Kurotowa is a suspicious fellow, however, and he strongly suspects that once his usefulness is at an end he'll most likely be "dealt with" to keep the secrets of the nobility secret. A self-described survivor will do the most extraordinary things when he thinks his life is in danger...
PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE: Kurotowa has just transferred onto the Silvana as Helmsman. He does not seem like a very likeable fellow.
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE: It will take some serious digging to figure this out, but he was framed for the drug thing. Even then you sure as hell won't be able to figure out who framed him.
